Typically Texas ranks second among the 50 states in yearly cash receipts from farming. Agriculture is the second largest industry in the state of Texas, generating close to $80 billion for the economy annually. The state is well known for its large ranches, such as King Ranch, which covers a greater land area than the state of Rhode Island. Partly due to the state’s sheer size, Texas has close to 1,100 different types of soils within its borders. When it comes to livestock, the “Lonestar” state leads the country in cattle operations, and significant quantities of chickens and hogs are raised. It is also noted to be the country’s largest producer of oil, cattle, sheep, and cotton. More wool comes from Texas than any other state in the nation.
