Close to 80% of Tennessee’s land is used for agricultural purposes, including forestry. In fact, forestry plays a vital role for the state’s economy, employing around 78,000 Tennesseans. More then half the state is covered with forest, and is home to more species of trees then any other state. Due to its vast number of diverse trees, the state ranks number one in the nation for hardwood production. The state ranks third in horses. Tennessee also leads the nation in the production of nursery and floriculture, both of which are specialty crops. Tobacco, soybeans, and cotton are the top crops of the state. Each Tennessee farmer feeds close to 129 people.
