An integral part of the Corn Belt, Indiana has 59,000 farms with each farm averaging 254 acres in size. The “Hoosier” state’s leading agricultural products are corn and soybeans. Most of Indiana’s corn is used for feed but a significant percentage is used toward manufacturing ethanol and sweeteners. The state ranks 5th in total US pork production with 6.3 million pigs being marketed in 2006 alone. Hay and wheat are also top harvested crops along with oats and, to a lesser extent, peppermint and spearmint. Indiana is the top producer of duck in the U.S. and it sells about 14 million turkeys each year.
