Alabama is considered one of the leading cotton producers in the nation. The state ranks third for peanut production, and second for commercial forestland. Livestock and poultry make up more than 80% of Alabama’s farm income. Broiler chickens and chicken eggs are the most important livestock products. As for crops, they account for less than 20% of Alabama’s agricultural income. One of Alabama’s more “left field” leading commodities is catfish. The state ranks second in the nation behind Mississippi for its catfish sales.
