Darren Gee and his brothers have been growing strawberries near Santa Maria, California for more than a quarter-century. Some consider Santa Maria the strawberry center of the world, since they ship tens of thousands of pounds of strawberries around the globe. But keeping up with demand means they’re always searching for new varieties. That includes working with university researchers to build a better berry.
