Traditional Waldorf Salad
The original recipe for this salad by Waldorf-Astoria maitre d’hotel Oscar Tschirky only called for apples, celery, and mayonnaise over the years walnuts were added. You can use walnuts, almonds, or pecans in this recipe depending on your taste. Makes 4 to 6 side-dish servings

Ingredients
2 cups chopped apples or pears (2 medium)
1-1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/3 cup slivered almonds or chopped pecans, toasted
1/4 cup celery
1/4 cup dried red tart cherries or raisins
1/4 cup seedless grapes, halved
1/3 cup whipping cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing

Directions
In a medium mixing bowl toss chopped apples or pears with lemon juice. Stir in nuts, celery, cherries or raisins, and grapes.

For dressing, in a chilled, small mixing bowl whip the cream to soft peaks. Fold mayonnaise or salad dressing into the whipped cream. Fold dressing into fruit mixture. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.
