Episode 605 - Hawaii’s Abalone Farmers addthis
Hawaii’s Abalone Farmers
Seafood consumption continues to grow, and many diners are seeking out a seafood delicacy once found only in a few places around the world. Abalone is a shellfish known for its sweet flavor and delicate texture. Harvesting enough of the shellfish has been a problem until recently. Now, new fish farming methods are adding to the supply.

The Big Island Abalone Corporation is growing hundreds of thousands of shellfish at their aquaculture operation in Hawaii. Abalone is shipped to the U.S. mainland, as well as markets in Asia. The company says a key ingredient in their success is growing the abalone in very deep sea water that’s thousands of years old.
