Episode 601 - Cattle & Conservation addthis
Farmer Robert Mills
It’s not everyday that you meet a city kid who wants to grow up to be a farmer. But Virginian Robert Mills decided at the age of 13 that farming was his future. He also decided that his approach to raising cattle and crops would have to involve steps that would also improve the environment.

The naysayers tried to discourage Robert Mills from even thinking about being a farmer.  But this Virginia native decided as a teenager that he wanted to own a piece of land and make his living in agriculture. So Robert joined the FFA, took agriculture courses in college and set his sights on creating a successful family farm that also had a focus on protecting the environment and improving water quality on the farm.  As for the naysayers? Robert will tell you, “My involvement in agriculture has given me and my family everything that we could have ever hoped for.”

Virginia Farm Fact
Virginia has some famous farmers to its credit. Both Thomas Jefferson and George Washington had large farms in Virginia and remember that the father of our nation chopped down that cherry tree in the “Old Dominion” state. Early settlers found that tobacco provided a quick cash crop and Virginia claims the earliest peanut farms in the United States.
