Jason Shoultz takes you to Montana where traveling harvesters cross the plains to bring in the wheat harvest of the Heartland. Paul Ryan travels to Oklahoma as farmers there look back on the trials and opportunities that emerged from America's Dustbowl. Pat McConahay finds a West Virginia company that carves out a niche in "down home cookin'" with products from the farm. And farm families in Mississippi celebrate their heritage in music that comes from the Mississippi delta.

Early in the season, they learned about harvesting at a contract harvesting outfit in Edson, Kansas. Then it was life on the road bringing in crops in Oklahoma and moving north with the harvest season. This time we catch up with them as they bring in a harvest of wheat in Montana. It’s a journey that has taught them about farming and life.

Heartland History Heartland History
It was a period of history that dramatically altered farm life in Oklahoma and other states that suffered through the Dust Bowl. It changed the way that farmers planted and harvested crops and it remains a reminder of the importance of correct agricultural procedures. We meet people who lived through the Dust Bowl and found lessons in what they experienced.

Roy Elswick grew up in West Virginia and decided that he would produce biscuits and baked goods that gave everyone a taste of hearty American recipes. Roy’s Tasty Blend line is now a staple for some families and his story is an inspiration on American agricultural products going from field to table.

The “Blues” were born in the farm fields of the Deep South and today that music keeps history alive for those who make their living in the rural farmland of Mississippi. Travel south to meet some of the people for whom the “Blues” are an important link to agriculture past and present.
