A Central Michigan dairy farm can be a bleak place in the depth of winter. Farmers struggle to keep their animals fed and healthy while fighting off bitter cold.  It’s lonesome and the tasks seem never-ending. So why can’t the dairyman we visit in mid-January imagine doing anything else?

In an even colder state, a farmer who runs a “pick-it-yourself” enjoys success during a remarkably short growing season. His customers pull produce from the ground like there’s no tomorrow. For some of these Alaskans, it may be the only fresh “green” food they can enjoy for months to come.

Some farmers in crowded New Jersey are fighting to hang on to their lands and livelihoods, but the state’s fishermen continue to ply the seas as they’ve done for generations. Meet a fisherman who’s part of a  group that’s bringing in the catch and attracting interested visitors at a place named “Viking Village”.

It’s a fact: thanks to the climate, there are things that grow in south Florida that just won’t take root anywhere else in the Heartland. One county operates one of the Heartland’s more unusual “farms,” where an exotic variety of fruits and spices from around the world flourish. Not all are attractive to look at. In this report, Jason Shoultz goes in for some taste-testing.

A short hop from the bright lights of downtown Las Vegas, a chef specializing in her own sweet art strives to put Henderson, Nevada on the map as a prime source of world-class gourmet chocolate. Local tastes are evident in her creations:  customers can expect to find martini- and tequila-flavored confections among the more traditional flavorings.
