In the late 1990s, African-American farmers won a settlement in a huge class-action lawsuit – against the U-S Department of Agriculture. They offered evidence that the USDA had for years discriminated against them in offering loans and support, costing hundreds of thousands their farms, land, and livelihoods. Today, less than one percent of all US farms are owned by African-Americans.
